Why Did Photo Thumbnails Suddenly Disappear?

Thumbnails in Windows File Explorer work like book displays in a library. They let you find what you need by looking at the cover without opening every heavy book. Windows caches small thumbnail images on your computer to load previews instantly.
However, visual effects often get disabled while tweaking PC optimization settings, or Windows updates can alter default Explorer settings. Accumulated cache files can also grow to hundreds of megabytes or several gigabytes and become corrupted, leaving File Explorer unable to render images and showing blank icons instead.
You don’t need to tweak the registry or install complex third-party tools. As of 2026 on Windows 11, adjusting folder options and clearing the cache takes just two quick steps for free.

Step 1: Uncheck One Box in Folder Options

The most common cause is that thumbnails are blocked in File Explorer settings. Press Win + E to open File Explorer, click the three dots (...) menu at the top, and select [Options].
In the [View] tab, scroll through the Advanced settings list to find ‘Always show icons, never thumbnails’. If this option is checked, Windows forces generic icons instead of photos. Uncheck it, then click [Apply] and [OK] to fix it immediately.
Additionally, thumbnails won’t display if the folder view size is set too small. Make sure the folder view is set to one of the supported formats below.
| View Layout | Thumbnail Preview Support |
|---|---|
| Extra large icons | Supported (Recommended) |
| Large icons | Supported (Recommended) |
| Medium icons | Supported |
| Small icons / Details | Not supported (Icons only) |
Step 2: Clear Corrupted Cache If Thumbnails Still Won’t Show

If photos still show up as icons after changing the setting, the existing thumbnail cache is likely corrupted. Press Win + R to bring up the Run dialog, type cleanmgr.exe, and press Enter.
When the Disk Cleanup window appears, check ‘Thumbnails’ in the list of files to delete and click OK. Deleting the corrupted cache forces Windows to re-read your files and rebuild fresh thumbnails from scratch.
Next, press Win + R again, type sysdm.cpl, and navigate to [System Properties] – [Advanced] – [Performance Settings]. Under the [Visual Effects] tab, make sure ‘Show thumbnails instead of icons’ is checked.
Keep in mind that the exact label in Disk Cleanup may vary slightly depending on your Windows version and language settings. In addition, official community threads note occasional sync bugs with cloud folders like OneDrive that may require separate troubleshooting.
Press Win + E right now and take 10 seconds to check if ‘Always show icons’ is enabled in your Folder Options.
